B.D. COLLEGE (Balabhai Damodardas College), Ahmedabad was established in 1956 by the donation of Sakarlal Balabhai Damodardas Charitable Trust. It is located in the heart of the walled city. It is the premier girls college affiliated with Gujarat university. It was inaugurated by Shri Morarjibhai Desai, the Chief Minister of Bombay Province. It has the proud privilege of being the first college in Gujarat University to have offered Home Science as the Entire subject in the Three Year Degree Course. The college has the honor of starting Post Graduate Center in Home Science in 1961, for the first time in Gujarat and since then it has remained the only P.G. center in Gujarat University. The P.G. Department has to its credit 160 dissertations. It also ran center for M.phil in Home Science for 6 years. Ten students also obtained Ph.D from this center under the guidance of Dr. Leelaben Shah, Dr. A.N. Desai and Dr. U.D. Patel. In 1983, the college hosted a conference of Gujarat Chapter of All India Home Science Teacher Association.

The college came under the protective wings of Gujarat Law Society. It has the singular fortune of being one of the academic societies in Gujarat. This change provided moral support and able guidance from shri A.K. Dave (1984-1992) and Principal Shri N.R. Shah – Director, G.L.S from 1992 till date. Our students have won many laurels. The college has always attained 20% to 30% higher results than the University results. Our Students have made their mark in various subjects like Home Science, Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy and Sanskrit winning more than the 165 Gold Medals and Prizes, in university Exams.

In this girls college in the extracurricular activities also, the students have carved a niche for themselves and have stood first in 225 competitions of all sorts-record as remarkable if not more as any co-education college. The college regularly holds talent search in elocution, Music, Dance and Drama, as also Elocution in several languages. The success of these efforts can be gauged from the fact that the college was awarded:

  • 8 first Prizes at Inter University Gujarati Radio Play Contest, the Competition at Gujarat Level.
  • The college won five scrolls at All India Elocution Competition.
  • The College won 165 shields and Trophies and more than 350 prizes for Inter College Elocution Competition in Gujarati, Hindi, English and Sanskrit. It had the honor of winning prestigious Mahadeo Desai Trophy 22 times.
  • The College won 38 shields and 135 prizes for inter college Essay Competitions.
  • The college won 10 shields for Dance, Drama and Music competitions at Youth Festivals.

The college represented Gujarat University in All India Youth Festival Folk Dance competitions Five times. At Youth Festival the college has been a topper for 25 years, bagging several prizes in Elocution Competition, Extempore Verse Making Competition, Group Discussion, Skit, Mine, Mono-acting, Folk Dance, Light Vocal Music, Group Songs, Classical Dance and Fine Arts Competitions like painting sculpture, poster making, college, rangoli etc.

Our student Sonal Sheth was selected to represent Gujarat University for student Cultural Exchange Programme at Osaka University, Japan. These extracurricular activities proved an incentive to academic studies as can be seen from the results at the University Examinations, which have been higher by 25% to 30% than the University results and the students have secured on avg. 4 University Gold Medals and Prizes at the University.

In SPORTS, the college has been Kho-Kho champion 14 times, volley ball champion 10 times as also champion in Basket Ball for the last six consecutive years, College Level. Our players have been selected in University Teams and Gujarat State Teams in Kho-Kho, Volley Ball, Base Ball, Basket Ball, Cricket, Ring Tennis and Table Tennis.

The college N.C.C Unit had the honor of sending 22 cadets in Republic day Parade, Delhi. Our cadets had the honor of being awarded Duke of Edinburgh Medals, for social work. Our cadet stood first in Para Trooping thrice. Our cadets won naval wing medal and one cadet won 3 national medals in Aero Modeling, as also Inter National License as Pilot. Our student obtained Gold Medal from the President of India for Mountaineering – ascending 19370 ft. before that one student was the first to ascend 21,000 ft. in Himalayan Range six of our students won Gold Medals in All India Riffle Shooting Competition.

The College N.S.S Unit won the N.S.S. Shield 10 times for literacy drive, 6 Trophies for highest Blood Donation and more than 30 prizes in Inter College Elocution, Our N.S.S. leader was adjudged the best in the University. Last year 43 N.S.S. Students obtained Gold Stamp certificates and 69 students were awarded Silver Stamp Certificates for Meritorious social works.

The college N.S.S. unit reached the pinnacle of performance when N.S.S leader Snehal Panchal added a feather in her cap by making a niche for herself at National Level. She was the first student from Gujarat to receive. All India Best Volunteer Award – “ Indira Gandhi National Award” in new Delhi. It was a matter of pride not only for the university but also for the State of Gujarat to receive this National Honor. College program officer Prof. M.B. shah was adjudged the best program officer in the same year-in 1998.

The college conducted Classical Instruments and Vocal Music classes for 15 years and the college had its own orchestra.
